At least 4 people killed after the tourist bus traveling back from the crashes of the Niagara cataracts: Fuentes

A tourist bus that travels back from a trip to the Niagara cataracts overturned in the state of New York on Friday, killing several people and hurting dozens of others, some of which were trapped or expelled, police said.

At least four people died in the accident, said sources of application of the law to ABC News, amid the rescue response in progress.

The “serious accident” occurred in the interest 90 in Pembroke, near Buffalo, according to the New York State Police. The images of the scene showed the side bus on a ditch and a large emergency response, including multiple medical helicopters.

“The bus was traveling east, just before Pembroke’s exit, and for unknown reasons, the vehicle lost control, entered the median, correct and ended in the ditch,” said New York State Police soldier James O’Callaghan, during an informative press session on Friday.

Almost all the more than 50 people who were on the bus suffered wounds, including cuts, bruises and abrasions, said O’Callaghan. Several people were expelled or trapped in the accident, he said, with rescue operations still ongoing.

Deaths include at least one child, said O’Callaghan.

Initially, the police said the collision also involved a truck, although he later said that the bus was the only vehicle involved.

The bus was going back to New York City after visiting the Niagara Falls, with 52 people, including the driver, on board, the police said. Most passengers were Indians, Chinese or Filipino, according to O’Callaghan. The driver survived and is “alive and well,” O’Callaghan said.

Two dozen patients were transferred to the Erie County Medical Center, with head injuries, limb fractures and other injuries, hospital doctors said. Everyone is expected to recover.

Three other patients were sent to the Strong Memorial Hospital, and at least one child was transported to the Oishei Children’s Hospital, hospitals told ABC News. Buffalo General Medical Center and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital also received patients from the accident.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she has been “informed about the tragic tourist bus accident” and that a rescue was underway.

“My team is closely coordinating with @NYSPOLICE and local officials who are working to rescue and provide assistance to all involved,” he said in a Declaration in x Earlier on Friday.

All lanes on the Pembroke route closed following the accident, which occurred east in the I-90. The lanes to the west have reopened since then.

“Wait strong delays and alternative travel routes,” said New York State Police.
