The National Association for the Advance of People (NAACP) filed a lawsuit against Texas on the new map of Congress that passed recently through the state legislature, arguing that discriminates against color voters and violates the Voting Rights Law of 1965.
The demand, which technically modifies a previous demand against the State that the organization presented, argues that the new maps, the map of the Congress subsequent to the census in 2021 and the maps of the State Representatives and State State of the express of the colors of the voters. ” Violation of the Law of Constitution and Voting Right of the United States.
The demand, presented on Tuesday, also argues that the Texas Legislature did not allow enough public comments or comments on the form of the maps that finally approved the Legislature.
“It is quite obvious that Texas’s effort to redistribute in the mid -decade, before the middle of the period next year, is racially motivated. The intention of the state here is to reduce the members of the Congress that represent the black communities, and that, in itself, is unconstitutional,” the president and CEO of Naacp, Derrick Johnson, said in a statement on Tuesday.
The claim calls, in part, that a court declares that the new map “was promulgated with an inadmissible discriminatory purpose and controlling on the basis of the race” and prohibit the state of enforcing or using the limits established on the map.

The Republicans who supported the map had affirmed during the audiences and the debate of the floor that the new maps were based on political performance and some other considerations. The map has not yet initiated law.
The lawsuit appoints Texas Greg Abbott’s governor and Texas Secretary of State, Jane Nelson as plaintiffs.
ABC News has communicated with its offices to comment on the new presentation.
Last week, the Texas Legislature approved a map of the Congress favored to the Republicans who could turn to five red districts by fusing Democratic seats in the areas of Houston, Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth to form new Republican seats and causing two districts of Rio Grande Valley to currently have more competitive.
The NAACP demand is one of the first demands against the new map of Congress. The plaintiffs in other in progress against the maps of the Texas Congress have also presented complementary presentations that argue that the new maps are also discriminatory, according to The Texas Tribune.
The NAACP also said Tuesday that it supports the blue states redrawing their own maps in reprisals against Texas.
“At this time, the NAACP urges California, New York and all other states to act immediately redirecting and approving new, legal and constitutional electoral maps,” the group wrote. “We must counteract the unconstitutional movement of Texas and make sure that if everything else fails, black Americans still have a voice in Congress.”
